Last Sunday I went out painting with Julie Baker who is a keen painter of the Fens with its huge skies.
I chose a distant view of the river going round behind dark distant trees. Just as important for me was that it was out the wind. I was very pleased with the over all tonality of the painting, but the sharp diagonal of the river needs work to keep your eye in the picture. Julie pointed out that I often select distant views – something I have never thought about before. It does help to keep things simple and avoid to much detail.
It is now exhibitions season and I have just sent my forms off to the Rheebridge Open which has recently moved venue, further from Cambridge, so I hope all those well-heeled buyers still come along. A smaller event I always support is the Open Exhibition at Foxton, which I would encourage you to visit if you are local. see www.foxtonart.org. There are many similar shows around but this one is well organised, the pictures are hung well in a bright hall and it attracts many professional artists.
